千鶴
私にとって１０００という数は重要で、いっぱいを意味し、十分を意味しています。
これまで、1000枚のドローイングを展示したり、自転車で1000キロ走った事もあります。
昔日本の原住民族アイヌは数字を４までしか使わなかったと言います。
生活の中でそれ以上の数字を必要としなかったのも事実でしょう。
日本には風習の一つとして病人やけが人が近親者に出たときに、家族や友人と千羽の折鶴を作り、その人に贈ります。
そうする事によって、その人が回復する信じているからです。
なぜ1000羽なのか文献を調べても定かでは無いのですが、現在の日本人にとってのリアリティのある数なのではと思うのです。
１０００とは十分を意味し、1万とも1億とも共通の意味を有しているのです。今回の製作の発端は、3年前に英語のできない僕が、人とコミュニケーションを図る際に一緒に折り鶴をプレゼントした事に始まります。そうすることで場がなごみ英語のできない僕を受け入れ易くなったのです。
そのとき、日本人であることやアメリカに来た事など文化的な部分の刺激やズレを体験したときに、アメリカと日本の性に関するズレの面白い事に気づきました。アメリカの地上波ＴＶでは女性のバストなどのヌードを一切放映しないのに、どこでも無修正のポルノ雑誌は購入できる。
また日本では逆で、無修正ポルノは違法で、地上波ＴＶでは毎日のように女性ヌードを見る事ができる。
そんな、似ているようで非なる法律的なズレを日本の風習とも言える、汚されざる物としてある千羽鶴
に、アメリカのポルノで織り込む事で、表せると思ったのです。

Senzuru / One Thousand Cranes:
Folding the Origami cranes for Kaihatsu was a communicative tool when
he first came to this country. Back then, Kaihatsu couldn't speak English
well, and folding cranes eased his communication between people.
One thousand cranes signify healing. When there is a sick person, people
fold one thousand Origami cranes by wishing his/her recovery that the
number one thousand has a special significance for healing in Japan.
Kaihatsu had worked with the number one thousand quite few times in the
past. He may be placed unconscious hopes to bring some changes to the
current conditions. In the past, Kaihatsu bicycled one thousand kilometers
from Hiroshima to Tokyo, incorporated that into his work. The other time,
he made one thousand drawings for his exhibition.
Kaihatsu says that replacing the pornographic images for the Origami papers
pinpoints the discrepancies between the prohibition in the manifestations
of sexes in the U.S. and in Japan. In the U.S., explicit manifestation
of sex is banned from the public spaces, yet such images are always available
at the magazine stands. In Japan, it is vice versa. By any means, the
essential male desire underlies in both countries. Enfolding the American
images into a Japanese media, therefore, he says banishes the social boundaries
between two countries.
